“Parallel import” is the import of goods with a trademark applied to them without obtaining the obligatory consent of the right holder of that trademark. Such importation is carried out “in parallel” and independently of the importation of the given goods by the right holder and without the consent of the right holder in Singapore. In 1988, Bestlink Auto Pte Ltd entered the relatively high parallel import market in Singapore and started importing brand new cars from Japan and the UK. Bestlink recognized that this market would provide the car buyer with the best value for money. Thus, it sought to use its experience in the automobile market to provide a broader range of offerings to the local car buyer.
